Did You Know?

  • Bluefield earned its name for the Blue Mountain Chicory growing in its fields.

  • Bluefield, WV and Bluefield, VA (formerly Graham, VA) were married July 12, 1924.

  • Ripley's Believe It or Not includes Bluefield's oldest school, Ramsey Elementary, because it has entrances on seven different levels.

  • The Bluefield railyard has a natural gravity "hump," creating the highest point on what had previously been the Norfolk & Western mainline.

  • The Bluefield Orioles has the longest running continuous relationship with a major league team (since 1958).

  • In 1939, Eddie Steele created a publicity stunt whereby the Chamber of Commerce would distribute free lemonade on any day the temperature exceeded 90 degrees at the airport.

    • 1989 - 50th Anniversary of the lemonade promotion
    • 1998 - September 14; latest date lemonade served
    • 2007 - Lemonade served a record-breaking 18 times

Bluefield's Bragging Rights

  • Bluefield housed the famous Baldwin Felts Detective Agency during the southern West Virginia mine wars in the 1920's.

  • On the night of his death, Hank Williams, Sr. stopped in Bluefield (Dec. 31, 1952).
  • Country singers Kitty Wells and Tom T. Hall have early ties to Bluefield.


  • Rock 'n Roll Baby" by the Stylistics has in the lyrics He was born in a theatre in Bluefield, WV -- the Colonial Theatre.


  • Nobel prize winner Dr. John Forbes Nash, Jr., whose life story was the inspiration for the movie A Beautiful Mind, is a Bluefield native.
