City Solicitor/Attorney

The City of Bluefield is seeking an energetic and knowledgeable professional for the position of City Solicitor/Attorney. The City of Bluefield utilizes a city-manager form of government with a Board of Directors consisting of five members elected to staggered four-year terms. The City Solicitor/Attorney conducts the legal business of the city and is responsible for all legal matters in which the city may have an interest. The individual is under the direction of the Board of Directors, works alongside other board officers, and assists city employees. The City Solicitor/Attorney is the legal adviser for all officials, officers, and departments of the city and represents the city in all litigation and proceedings. Work includes, but is not limited to: drafting and reviewing ordinances, crafting resolutions, assisting in the development of policies and procedures, draft and review contracts, and completing other duties that may arise or are assigned. Knowledge of municipal law, civil code enforcement, land use, zoning, labor relations, and legislative interpretation are expected. Applicants should have a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an accredited law school, experience as a municipal attorney is preferred but not mandatory, and must be licensed by the West Virginia State Bar and U.S. District Court, Southern District of West Virginia. The selected applicant is encouraged to establish residency in the corporate limits of the City of Bluefield upon employment.

Fire Fighter

Notice is hereby given that the Fire Fighters Civil Service Commission of the City of Bluefield, West Virginia, will be conducting entry level tests for probationary fire fighters in the Bluefield, West Virginia Fire Department.  Applicants must be between 18 and 35 years of age, must be or become a resident of Mercer County, have a high school diploma or GED, and have a valid West Virginia Drivers License.  Application will only be taken at the City of Bluefield, Municipal Complex, City Clerk’s Office, 200 Rogers Street, Bluefield, WV until Friday, July 7th, 2017 at 4:30 p.m.  EEO

Summer Camp Counselor

This full-time, temporary position provides direct supervision of a group of children in a seasonal day camp/afterschool program. Provides a quality experience to children and parents focused on core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

Essential functions:

Supervises a group of children.
Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with organization values.
Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.             
Attends staff meetings and trainings.
Follows Parks and Recreation policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.

Qualifications:

High school graduate or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.
Previous experience working with children preferably in a day camp setting.
Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: archery, camping, songs/music, skits, sports, aquatics, recreational games, etc…
At least 18 years of age.
Valid Driver’s License.
CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training before start of camp.
Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.

Physical demands include: Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.

Parks and Recreation Aide

Bluefield City Parks and Recreation is seeking qualified applicants for a part-time temporary position as the Parks and Recreation Aide.  Applicants should have experience working with youth; maintain a professional and positive image in the community.

Responsibilities:

Assist with Youth & Adult Programs
Facility Cleanliness
Front Desk Help/ Coverage
Learning and Understanding RecDesk Software

Throughout the year the Parks and Recreation Department runs programs, hosts events and facilitates events for others. The Parks and Recreation Aide will help assist the staff during programs and events. This is a part-time, temporary position and the hours will vary depending on the season. Typically, the Recreation Aide will work approximately 20 hours per week.
