The Engineering and Inspection Department is a multifaceted department charged with assuring compliance to State Building Codes as well as the City's Code of Ordinances. It is comprised of a building inspector and several code enforcement officers, both fully certified and licensed by the West Virginia State Fire Marshal's Office. Both receive ongoing training to retain state licensure. The building inspector is responsible to perform compliance inspections on buildings under construction or renovation. He also oversees the city's demolition program to rid neighborhoods of dilapidated, dangerous structures. The code enforcement officers investigate complaints about improperly maintained properties, abandoned vehicles and other nuisances. Animal control issues are also run through this office. Building permits are issued through this department.
Gerald Steele is the City of Bluefield building inspector. He is a certified building code official by the West Virginia State Fire Marshall.
Lori Mills is the code enforcement supervisor for the City of Bluefield. She is certified as a property maintenance and housing inspector by the International Code Council and she is certified as a property maintenance building code inspector by the West Virginia State Fire Marshal. She takes care of rental property inspections in the city and code enforcement issues.
Tyler Myers is a code enforcement officer for the City of Bluefield. He is available to assist the residents and businesses of Bluefield, West Virginia.
