After School Counselor

This part-time position provides direct supervision of a group of children in an after school program and summer seasonal day camp program. Provides a quality experience to children and parents focused on core values: honesty, respect, responsibility and caring. 



  1. Supervises a group of children.
  2. Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with organization values.
  3. Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards.             
  4. Attends staff meetings and trainings.
  5. Follows Parks and Recreation policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
  6. Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. 


  1. High school graduate or equivalent; one year or more of college preferred.
  2. Previous experience working with children preferably in a program setting.
  3. At least 18 years of age.
  4. Valid Driver’s License.
  5. CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training before start of camp.
  6. Previous experience with diverse populations preferred. 

Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.

Parks and Recreation Aide

Bluefield City Parks and Recreation is seeking qualified applicants for a part-time temporary position as the Parks and Recreation Aide. Applicants should have experience working with youth, and maintain a professional and positive image in the community. Position will be to assist with the basketball games and concessions. Flexible schedule, nights and weekends through mid-March.

Diesel Mechanic Supervisor 

Successful candidate for this full-time position will understand and apply basic and advanced skills to perform routine and more complex operations using tools and equipment appropriate for the position. 


Responsible for supervising shop operations; supervising andparticipating in all maintenance; assisting mechanics; scheduling, assigningservice, maintenance and repair needs; repairing, servicing and maintainingcity vehicles; preparing and maintaining maintenance records and files.

Applies a general understanding of the technical concepts,practices, and procedures and a general knowledge of industry standards andgovernment regulations related to the repair and maintenance of electric,diesel, and gasoline industrial trucks.

Plans and accomplishes a complete range of operational assignments and tasksthat are generally routine to moderately complex related to repairingof diesel and gasoline powered trucks.

Performs both major and minor repairs related to diesel engines andtransmissions.

Reads job orders and observes and listens to trucks in operation to determinemalfunction and to plan work procedures.

Diagnoses mechanical problems using charts, technical manuals and previousexperience. Works with electronic diagnostic equipment and computer basedtechnical reference materials.

Overhauls gas or diesel engines. Examines protective guards, loose bolts, andspecified safety devices on trucks, and makes adjustments.

Lubricates moving parts and drives repaired truck to verify conformance tospecifications.

Disassembles unit and inspects parts for wear. Repairs or replaces parts suchas pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings. Overhauls or replacescarburetors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps.

Rebuilds parts such as crankshafts and cylinder blocks. Diagnoses, removes,repairs and replaces electrical and suspension components. Installs newignition systems, changes or recharges batteries, and replaces transmissionsand other parts. Rewires ignition system, lights, and instrument panels.

Removes and replaces parts such as fluids, gauges, wheelbearings and seals, tires, door assemblies, lights, valves, water pumps, andhoses.

Relines and adjusts brakes, aligns front end, repairs or replaces shockabsorbers, and solders leaks in radiator. Replaces and adjusts headlights, andinstalls and repairs accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, andwindshield wipers.

Performs other duties as required, which may includeassignments in job classifications other than the primary assignment.

Diesel Mechanic Certification / Training

CDL Driver / Laborer

Applicants for this full-time position should be able to operate street and sanitation department motor vehicles and road maintenance equipment. This position uses hand tools and power-operated hand tools and machinery, and can be physically demanding with exposure to extremes of heat and cold. Applicants should expect to perform general labor and other duties as assigned.

Public Works Laborer

Applicants for this full-time position must be 18 years old or older. Responsible for maintaining city property through the use of multiple small tools (i.e. hand tools, shovels, weed eaters, riding mowers, etc.) while taking direction from a direct supervisor. Duties may include, but will not be limited to garbage pick-up, mowing, trimming, leaf removal, snow removal, and other general labor duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Marketing Internships

The City of Bluefield is seeking interns who can work approximately 20 hours per week. These positions are paid, part-time / temporary position with the potential of turning into a full-time permanent position. Recent graduates will also be considered for the position.

Through an internship in the Community and Economic Development department, the intern will assist with:

  • Coordinating with organizations and community groups for events and business opportunities.
  • Extending city support to community groups and events.
  • Creating digital brochures for a marketing outreach initiative.
  • Marketing the City of Bluefield to be the place of choice to live, work and play.
  • Marketing to potential start-up businesses and potential business relocations.
  • Be involved in creating narratives and other support to GIS projects to be used for the city’s comprehensive plan.
  • Marketing through social media platforms.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Education:  Preferably in advertising, marketing or communications.


  • Strong communication and writing abilities.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe and related software products.
  • Advanced experience with social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
  • Experience with WordPress preferred.
  • Experience in videography and photography with the ability to edit and create quality marketing materials.
